The University of Brighton has produced talented artists and designers to follow in the footsteps of past graduates including the legendary Biba designer Barbara Hulanicki, Julien MacDonald – voted British Designer of the Year 2001 – and Gresham Blake, Brighton’s modish tailor to the stars.
This year’s rising stars include Steven Woodward, fashion with business student who was runner up at this year’s Fashion Awareness Direct (FAD) competition and whose work is showcased as part of London Fashion Week. His designs were selected from more than 100 entrants in a competition described by Vogue.com as an ‘undeniable springboard’ for the next generation of talent.
Local businesses are tapping into this wealth of talent in design, fashion and arts through our internship scheme, which involves graduates working with local companies and enterprises.
If you think you could benefit from offering an internship, contact Katherine Hope, Internships Officer at the University of Brighton Careers Centre on 01273 642855, email careers@brighton.ac.uk or go online at www.brighton.ac.uk/careers/employers

Brighton menswear designer/tailor Gresham Blake.
“I really value the time I spent at City College. The tutors opened me up to creative possibilities which was very positive. I went to the College feeling like I really didn’t know what I wanted to do in my life and it really focused me. I knew I had to do something that I could make a living out of and the course showed me where my talents lay.” Gresham Blake, Brighton
Clare Rogers, founder of Brighton’s highly successful beauty salon and day spa, The Treatment Rooms, says:
“’The Executive Celebration was a really enjoyable evening with fantastic food laid on by the catering students. I think local businesses working with City College will help prepare graduates better for the working environment and employer expectations. My time at the College gave me the basic skills needed to start on the road to success. I’m still passionate about the Health & Beauty industry and enjoy developing young staff.”
Principal Phil Frier says:
“Aside from clarifying our achievable ambitions as outlaid in the Strategic Plan and showcasing our students’ talents, this event was very much about reaching out to local stakeholders and employers so that they feel engaged with City College and have an emotional investment in our future. Maintaining a relationship with successful alumni like Gresham and Clare is very important to us as they provide fantastic inspirational role models for our students.”
Elizabeth Betts opens her own store continues
‘Quilty Pleasures’ on Upper Hamilton Road in the Prestonville area of Brighton, stocks a combination of selected contemporary and vintage-inspired printed cotton fabric from brands such as Michael Miller, Amy Butler, Kokka, Sevenberry and Makower – suitable for quilt making and sewers alike. A variety of thread, buttons, ribbons, haberdashery and reference books are also stocked. The craft of Patchwork and Quilting is currently experiencing a huge revival in the UK with the Victoria and Albert museum honouring the tradition with a major exhibition featuring historical quilts as well as contemporary work by Tracey Emin and Tuner prize winner Grayson Perry.
Elizabeth says:
“The patchwork and quilting course taught me skills in a specialised area of craft and it gave me a new passion and direction in my life. But I found that there was nowhere in Brighton or Hove specialising in patchwork and quilting so I either had to travel far or get supplies via mail order. Having identified a niche in the market, starting my own shop combines working for myself and doing something that I’m passionate about. It’s been a steep learning curve and I sourced a lot of the stock by looking at things I bought in the past and really liked and then finding out who the wholesaler or the manufacturer was and contacting them directly. Getting the business up and running has taken a lot longer and been far more difficult than I ever thought it would be but we got there in the end and I’m quite proud!”
“The bookkeeping course at City College gave me skills that I would have had to have paid someone else to provide and it’s given me greater understanding of the business side of running the shop which combines well with the fun, creative side that I developed on the other course. It was also significant that the courses were part time and allowed me to study while my two children were young.”

City College Phil Frier says:
“I’m delighted to see former students like Elizabeth using the skills they’ve learnt at City College to start their own businesses. It sums up what the Further Education sector is all about. Coming out of the dark days of the recession, it’s great to see enterprising Brightonians showing the type of initiative and drive needed to boost the local economy.”
