Retailers will be able to open pop up shops more easily under new Government plans to reduce red tape, boosting the high street. By removing tiresome restrictions the government hope that retailers can fill some of the empty space reviving highstreets. the government plan to scrap the key barrier, a planning regulation defining what a shop can and cannot be used for, such as office space, houses or retail.
Ministers hope the deregulation will create more affordable sites and attract entrepreneurs who want to open start-up businesses and act as a launchpad for new businesses creating a more family-fun environment.
A new guide published today offers advice on how to make a town a more social experience, which is a recommendation self-styled retail guru Mary Portas made in her report to Government to help revitalise high streets. The new guide encourages town centres to remove street clutter for pedestrians, open more street stalls and pop up shops and offer attractions such as pavement cafes, play areas, outdoor libraries or street entertainment.

There is a common belief that success in design relies largely on the ‘portfolio’ – the ‘outcome’ of design as opposed to its ‘activity or process’. Students experience this phenomena early in their career with the importance placed on the end year show – the display of the outcome of design that clients so crave in order to gauge a designer’s worth.
Would a professional accreditation which requires continual professional
development address this anomaly and provide those commissioning, employing or engaging designers with a basis upon which to choose a designer in keeping with other professions?
If so then such a professional accreditation must sit firmly within design
education in order that designers are fit for purpose when graduating and are committed to their continual development as professionals rather than
focussing on the continual development of their portfolio.
The day’s activities will focus on the need for the professional qualification of Chartered Designer, how best to integrate it into design education and how design education may support its on-going delivery.
An audience of academics, students in their final year, recent graduates, design practitioners and employers will have the opportunity to hear the views of design sector stakeholders on the topic and to input during sessions.
This is the first of a series of consultations to be held by CSD in order to inform the introduction of a Register of Chartered Designers. Places are limited and there will be a high demand so please reserve your place NOW by emailing > csd@csd.org.uk
