Gossypium
Abigail & Thomas started out in the cotton fields of Kutch, in western India 1998. Being ideologists, they went in search of cotton that wouldn’t harm the environment or exploit Indian farmers. As textile technologists, they were appropriately qualified to pursue their vision & together with Agrocel – a farmers’ service centre, they developed a formula for growing & trading in cotton. They made sure they never lost sight of the Indian farmers’ needs in creating a solution that would ensure their economic stability & also protect the environment.
Two years later… Agrocel Pure & Fair cotton was born, it’s the only one of its kind & is used to make Gossypium products. All the cotton is organic & is fully traceable back to the farms from which it came. And the farmers receive a fair price for it, above the market price.
From India to Brighton Beach – Gossypium started its life on Brighton Beach, via a market stall, & from there Abi & Thomas soon learned what people were looking for in organic cotton & adapted their range accordingly.
Lewes, 2000 – A proper office, & shop to match, in the historic county town of Lewes. It’s a good place to live & grow a business.
Nine years later… Today Gossypium is a leading brand in Fairtrade certified organic cotton fashion. “All our products are designed in-house & we like to think we stand alone, naturally.”
Our ongoing company objective is to create a strong collection of classic products which respect Gossypium’s ethical & environmental values, at the right price for the consumer.
“Welcome to our world of ethical living!”

Generation Expo October 2011
Fantastic opportunity for all those over ’40′s to relive lost youth at Brighton Centre Sussex.
Personal styling and shopping expert, and recently crowned ‘Best Female Ambassador to Fashion in Sussex’ at The First Sussex Fashion Awards, Jane Busby was on hand to provide creative fashion tips and advice.
..”The first Generation Expo in England was held at the Brighton Centre during October. Designed by and for those in their 40s, 50s and 60s who love live music, Generation Expo featured a host of exhibitors from the arts, fashion, travel, sports, health, music, food, drink and technology to entertain visitors throughout the weekend.
There were live performances by Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford from Squeeze and Bob Harris himself was interviewed as he celebrates 40 years of the Old Grey Whistle Test. On Sunday Adam Ant was interviewed and he performed an exclusive acoustic set to close the inaugural Generation Expo.
I was at the exhibition giving style tips, help and advice throughout the weekend. Following this several people have booked one of my personal shopping experiences to help save time and money on a wardrobe update and boosting their confidence knowing they are wearing the colours, styles and shapes to suit their individual needs.
I look forward to being involved next year as the show grows and becomes a successful annual event in Brighton.

Fashion Sussex eMagazine – August 2011
A big thank you to Alex Turchyn, a Brighton based personal stylist this month who comments …
Hi, I’m Alex Turchyn, Brighton’s Colour Analyst and Personal Stylist from House of Colour. My journey began seven years ago after watching my friend literally ‘blossom’ before my eyes in both confidence and how wonderful she looked on a daily basis, with minimal effort. “Whatever she’s doing, I want a piece of the action!” and after having my ‘colours done’ I was totally convinced that I had found something magical. Thus I began the process of training to become one of House of Colour’s network of elite Personal Stylists.
So what’s involved and what makes us different from the rest – after all there are thousands of Personal Stylists out there! The key is that it’s all about you! Have you ever watched a person have a make-over, take the advice on board for a few weeks and then gradually go back to how they were? It’s most likely because they may well have been dressed on the outside but what’s on the inside has not been supported. On the House of Colour journey, we don’t just look at styles, shapes and colours; we find what works for you, your budget and your lifestyle.
The starting point, however, is Colour Analysis. So what makes colour so special? The impact of colour is everywhere from a ‘grey day’ to ‘feeling blue’ to ‘a ray of sunshine’, ‘seeing red’, ‘green with envy…’ What if you could actually use colour in the way you dress as a powerful force to support you in every area of your life? You see, each of us has a unique skin tone and eye colour, which means that some colours can make us look great, and some have completely the opposite effect.
It was the advent of Colour in the film and television industry in the 1940′s which brought about an interest in the different effects of colour on peoples appearance. It was documented by an artist named Robert Dorr, who observed how an actress could look wonderful one day, yet tired and older the next; he recognised this was the effect of the colour she was wearing on her skin. Dorr had a good understanding of the rules of colour groupings, honed by the Swiss artist Johannes Itten, who worked and taught at the Bauhaus School of Art in Germany. These rules are now taught in art and design schools throughout the world. Itten also created the twelve point colour wheel which is in wide use today on paint charts, in dyeing kits and in hairdressers’ colour charts.
The understanding of how colour works, especially in the film industry was of particular interest to me as I am also a professional actress and after going through the House of Colour Journey, I started to realise that the ratio of acting jobs I was getting was increasing dramatically. You see, when you understand how to dress who you are (your personality) as well as what you are (your body architecture) it all comes together. Because you look great and feel comfortable in your own skin you come across as credible, look attractive and understand what your clothes are saying about you. You only get a few seconds to make a great first impression – whether socially or professionally – so make it the right one!
House of Colour Fashion Forecast
Colour blocking is here to stay and as a Colour Analyst I am very pleased about that! Last year’s Autumn / Winter trend was awash with Black and Camel but this Winter we’ll still be dazzling in Jewel brights.
We’re also continuing to travel back through the decades. Spring / Summer saw A flamboyant mix of ‘70s retro glamour, latino frills and oriental touches. This season we will see 60’s inspired statement pieces colour blocked in zesty citrus and vibrant jewel tones. We’ll also be seeing wardrobe classics such as the shift dress imbued with an elegant 40s Feel. Watch out for oversized faux fur stoles and elbow-length gloves in luxurious fabrics adding a touch of Hollywood glamour!
The sartorial masculine tailoring of last season has moved from being relaxed and fluid to full on ‘girl meets boy’ with sharp structured looks creating sleek lines and defining the silhouette.
And as a complete contrast, watch out for fashionable ‘Folk Appeal’ inspired by ethnic prints, layers upon layers of varying patterns from stripes to squares and heavier materials to keep us warm in the winter months.

Fashion Sussex eMagazine – July 2011
A big thank you to Gay Richardson, a Worthing based personal stylist this month who comments …
Our new eMagazine now includes a monthly fashion blog and this month Gay Richardson, our top independent fashion stylist from Worthing, Sussex, who enjoys fashion styling, wants to tell you more about whats available in Susssex.
Hello I’m Gay Richardson and I have lived in Sussex for 28 years having migrated from The North!
I started my styling business Style Me Confident 5 years ago because I believe that if you feel fabulous in what you are wearing you also feel confident and when you feel confident you can achieve anything.
I am on a mission to help everyone look and feel fantastic in what they wear, whatever their age, size, shape or budget.
My by line is buy less, wear more, always feel fabulous, as in these days and times we need to consider the environment too.
I love to create outfits from a range of sources from high street, vintage, relatively unknown designers, to look individually me.
We are now mid way through June 2011 and the autumn pre –collections are about to hit the shops; I understand that our unique British weather may necessitate such extreme measures but really autumn pieces in JUNE??
Slow down!
The fashion industry has gained speed over the past few decades to such a pace that Kate, sorry, Catherine, Middleton’s wedding dress had been copied and was on sale within hours of our first glimpse.
The trend of ‘fast fashion’ is to buy vast quantities of cheap clothing ( generally made abroad to the extreme detriment of exploited women- yes mainly woman- read Lucy Siegle’s book To Die for is fashion wearing out our world) and it just negates the pleasure of fashion not to mention being somewhat unethical…………
because everything is always available to everybody at every price point and whilst that’s great for the hardened fashion followers its definitely not great for the worlds resources and even more so individuality.
Everyone looks the same ………………..and it’s tantamount to boring!
We want individuality we want uniqueness and we want quality, please.
This gorgeous jacket epitomises what British, nay Brighton, designers produce, that are quality garments, unique (hand printed industrial cotton) ‘on trend’ and affordable at £190. This is from Studio AILSA, 19 Bond street http://www.a-i-l-s-a.com
We have it but it isn’t always easy to find.
Good news though – if you pop along to the Brighton museum there is currently (until the end of June) an installation- ‘Couture Brighton’ with prominent Brighton designers who have used Brighton as their inspiration to create eight opulent new gowns in an exhibition of unparalleled beauty.
Organised by Kevin Freeman of Renaissance Creative design, this is his creation inspired by the west pier.
Renaissance specialises in the unusual, the extravagant and the Avant Garde and has recently been shortlisted for Designer of the Year by the Sussex Fashion Trust. www.renaissancecreativedesign.com
I challenge you to start to create your own unique wardrobe collection that will suit your colouring & your body shape and express your personality whilst making you feel fabulous.
Then unlike the teenagers who HAVE to be seen in something different for each facebook ‘show’, you will wear your wares more than once yet in a different way.
Fashion Sussex is aiming to facilitate you with this process by getting new and young designers working with independent stores and stocking their designs….we cannot wait.
NEWS – HOT OFF THE PRESS – the sizing issue
All Walks ( www.allwalks.org ) ask universities to get ‘fashion conscious’ for the majority of us who aren’t a size 10.
All fashion colleges currently train on dummies size 8/10, but Edinburgh College of Art will develop new approaches to fashion education training on a specially commissioned set of UK sized 8-18 dummies as well as hearing from real women.
By creating fashion imagery that mirrors the diverse and individual beauty of women, it is hoped this launch will inspire more diverse fashion craftsmanship throughout the country.
AND FINALLY…….
The latest fashion folly is to be 10% cool aka TPC! Its all about not trying too hard but still looking up to date……….I believe that is what I have been trying to say!
Apparently Samantha Cameron fits the profile (ankle tattoo & half term in Ibiza) though personally I prefer Alexa Chungs’ TPC.
Let me know what’s your TPC thing.
Until next time…………
