Juliana Sissons
Juliana Sissons Couture Collection Medieval and Renaissance Room Victoria & Albert Musuem London
Brighton & Hove Sussex Fashion designer, Juliana Sissons, participated in the V&A’s Artist in Residency programme between July and December 2010. During this time Juliana used theV&A’s Museums medieval and renaissance galleries for research and was particularly inspired by the armour collection and by images depicting armour within the many tapestries and sculpture.
Sisson’s latest collection which was shown last year at the V&A London, is of developmental knitted pieces inspired by the research, skills exploration and textile experimentation gained during her residency. Like armour, these pieces can be worn separately or can be worn in conjunction with other items from the collection to make up whole outfits. e juliana.sissons@ntlworld.com

Modern Love

This month will see the new Autumn Winter Collection 2011/2012 collection from Modern Love to launch exclusively in Liberty, London. Modern Love is an unashamed fusion of influences, producing stunning clothing that is artistic but still wearable. What sets Modern Love apart is its use of exclusive prints in limited editions, in colours that enhance and radiate, on clothes that wrap and touch without restriction. Modern Love is collaboration between Sarah Arnett and Kim Hunt.
Stephanie Jones, Associate Buyer Womenswear, Liberty Said, “I’m so pleased that Modern Love came to our Best of British open call for new and emerging designers. As soon as I saw the beautiful illustrated prints and bold use of colour, I knew the brand would fit perfectly into the Liberty aesthetic. Shapes are feminine and flattering so I think it will really appeal to the Liberty customer”.
Arnett and Hunt both agree that, “to unveil a new collection in Liberty is very exciting,” Although the pair have 30 years of Fashion and design experience and have worked together previously at Sarah Arnett, Modern Love is only in its second season. “We felt that it was the right fit for Liberty”, said Hunt, “exclusive print is our USP and we had Liberty in mind in the design process”. Renaissance Couture
It’s been a fantastically exciting time recently for Renaissance Couture. When I was shortlisted for Designer of the Year in May, we were in the middle of the Bridal Season and the studio was a sea of tulle, lace and silk to be transformed into lavish gowns for weddings taking place all over the world. Each gown we produce is unique and so far this year we have produced everything from full romantic gowns with shredded tulle skirts to sensual satin gowns with appliquéd lace and beaded embellishment.
We also produced our new bridal collection which will be used to promote Renaissance Couture in the press and at bridal shows for the next 12 months. The collection consists of eight individual pieces and heavily favours reflective metallic layering and crystal embellishment with beautifully paneled corsets and sculpturally elegant skirts.
The collection has just been photographed by celebrity photographer David Levine, working with an amazing team of creatives including hair stylist Simon Webster, (whose work will grace the front cover of October’s Vogue), Makeup artist Lucille Dee and my muse, model Simone Jane Piper. All the beautiful vintage inspired jewellery was kindly lent for the shoot by Rosie Fox (rosiefox.com) and I imagine these images will shortly be gracing the pages of some of the nation’s finest magazines.
Renaissance Couture evening wear will be appearing in New York magazine ‘XO’ from August as the result of an edgy shoot in Ligne Roset by photographer Ramses Radi and there is a full page spread of John Farrar’s beautiful image of our Brighton Museum Couture dress in the next edition of Faceon, the makeup industry’s favourite glossy. I have also just had a full page interview in ETC magazine talking to stylist Igor Srzic-Cartledge about what influences and inspires me; so press wise things are looking good!
Another aspect of our work is the creation of bespoke stage costume for celebrities and performers and June started with a bang when Sandie Shaw was photographed at the start of her tour wearing a pink Union Jack outfit that I designed for her. The images were splashed across the Daily Mail, the Telegraph, The Express and the Guardian and she will be wearing another new outfit for her appearance at Vintage at Southbank. At the time of writing I am waiting to see what the press thinks of this one.
The magical appearance of Romany, Diva of Magic on Saturday night prime time TV Penn & Teller ‘Fool Us’ show was another coup for Renaissance Couture. We recently created sparkling new costumes for her award winning performance in Las Vegas. She then went on to wear the new outfits for the Penn & Teller show and the feedback has been amazing.
Future projects include producing a small range of contemporary pleated jackets and skirts in luxurious fabrics to be sold through an exclusive boutique and I am very excited about the development of a new collection of louche, period inspired menswear for the more extravagant Renaissance male. I have also just been accepted as an Associate Lecturer at Northbrook College and I am looking forward to passing on industry knowledge there over the next few months, then I am delivering a day of Masterclasses at the Royal Albert Hall in November as part of their Creative Quarter programme.
Finally and probably most importantly is the development of the new Renaissance Couture website which I would like to see going live before Christmas. It’s always non-stop here but I do love it! e Kevin@Renaissancecreativedesign.com
